How to Duplicate a Post in WordPress
Duplicate posts easily with just one click.
Background
The easiest way to duplicate a post in WordPress is by using a plugin, as not only the post content needs to be duplicated, but also the post thumbnail, post terms, post meta fields, etc.
I recommend using the plugin Duplicate Post. It is well-positioned in the WordPress Plugin Directory and it is actively maintained.
Installation and use
Install and activate the plugin Duplicate Post. The plugin can duplicate posts of any post type, but by default only the post types Post and Page are enabled.
Once activated, the plugin adds two links to each entry in the post list. If you do not see these links, the most probable reason is that you are viewing the screen of a post type not set as cloneable in the configuration of the plugin.
- Clone: Duplicate the post and return to the list
- New Draft: Duplicate the post and open the new clone in the Edit Post screen
Configuration
The configuration of the plugin is available at Settings > Duplicate Post in the WordPress admin bar. The first tab gives options to specify the elements of the post that should be copied to the new post. It also allows specifying a prefix or a suffix for the title.
The second tab gives options to specify the user roles that can duplicate posts and the post types that can be duplicated. The third tab is for specifying where to add the links Clone and New Draft.
Remember to click Saves Changes after adjusting the plugin options.
SEO
Keep in mind that Google and other search engines hate duplicated content. After duplicating a post, make sure to add original content to the new post, otherwise your website will be penalized by search engines.
