Discover Managua: Old Cathedral of Managua
The Old Cathedral of Managua has an imposing facade and elegant neoclassical design.
Overview
The Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago Apóstol of Managua, or simply Old Cathedral of Managua, is a neoclassical building, in the city of Managua, capital of Nicaragua.
Its construction began in 1928 and was inaugurated in 1938. The north tower is consecrated to Saint Peter, the south to Saint Paul, and the central front to Jesus. Like most cathedrals in the world, it is shaped like a Latin cross.
On Saturday, December 23, 1972 at 12:35 a.m., a strong earthquake shook Managua, followed by two aftershocks. The city was destroyed. The cathedral remained standing, but suffered serious damage that left it unable to hold religious services. The clock on the Saint Paul tower was left marking the time of the first earthquake.
Since then, the cathedral has suffered deterioration, abandonment and new earthquakes. There have been restoration attempts, but none have succeeded. Despite that, still in ruins, the Old Cathedral of Managua remains an icon of the city of Managua and Nicaragua.
